A video of a man with Down’s Syndrome voicing his employment concerns has gone viral – attracting more than 30,000 hits on the internet in one week alone.
Mr Thomas Cullen, 20, uploaded the video as an appeal to find a job – after fruitless job hunting for a period of 12 months lead him nowhere, despite his experience in various working environments, and his keen involvement in the theatre in his local home town of Thirsk, North Yorkshire.
Since the 16-second video managed to attract unprecedented attention, Mrs Carolyn Cullen, Thomas’ mother, has said that people in Thirsk had started to recognise Thomas in the street.
However, despite the popularity of the short video clip, which sees Thomas appeal for job offers from various industries, Mrs Cullen says that Thomas is yet to receive an offer of work.
The Down’s Syndrome Association launched an appeal in 2012 to improve understanding of the condition amongst recruitment agencies and employers.
“People view somebody with a disability as not being capable to do the job, but I would like him to get a job and lead a normal life like anybody else,” said Mrs Cullen.
“He’s very capable and very sociable and has excellent communication skills – he just needs somebody who is prepared to give him a chance”.
