A group of MPs have called on the Government to do more to close the autism employment gap, a report has revealed.
Coinciding with the launch of a new National Autistic Society report, more than 100 MPs marched on parliament to address the staggering levels of unemployment of autistic people.
The report highlights what employers and the Government can do to close the gap.
Leading the charge, Madeleine Moon, Labour MP for Bridgend, has called on Parliament to ensure that autistic people can access specialist support to help them find and stay in work, as well as bring in a national programme to raise employers’ awareness of the skills and potential of autistic people.
The latest figures revealed that just 32 per cent of people with autism are in work, a number which Ms Moon describes as being “clearly not good enough”.
The report further reveals that just 16 per cent of people with autism are in full-time paid work.
She said: “Government and businesses need to work together to help increase the numbers of autistic people in work. We need to make sure that employers know this and are able to open their doors to autistic people.”
