New IQ test designed for children with autism

Researchers say that a simple picture-based test is a reliable way to assess verbal intelligence in a child with autism.

The tests are used to measure an individual’s verbal and nonverbal intelligence quotient, commonly known as IQ.

The researchers say that these types of tests may prove useful, as current verbal tests which require spoken responses may potentially underestimate intelligence of children with autism.

This is because one of the major symptoms of autism relates to reduced social interaction and communication.

The test, Peabody Picture Vocabulary Test, sees participants respond to instructions by pointing to one of four illustrations that represent a particular word.

For example, one question might ask the participant to “point to ‘catching’”.

As the questions and images become increasingly more difficult, the researcher will be able to gauge the child’s level of intelligence.

They add that each test takes approximately 10 – 15 minutes.
