Former firefighter with Parkinson’s disease to tackle cycle challenge

A British woman recently diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease has decided to tackle a 477-mile cycle challenge to help raise awareness of the condition nationwide.

Former firefighter Leanne Owen was forced to retire from her successful career after being diagnosed with the condition at just 42 years of age.

But Ms Owen is currently training to tackle the 477-mile challenge through Yorkshire and Lincolnshire to help raise awareness of the disease.

Her efforts will also help to raise money towards research into potential cures for the disease in the near future.

“I don’t focus on the things that I can’t do, I focus on the things I can do,” said Ms Owen.

The ambitious challenge will take Ms Owen, her co-rider and support team through several towns and cities in West Yorkshire and beyond – from Wakefield through to Sheffield, Scunthorpe, Hull, Scarborough and Whitby.

The final leg of the journey will see Ms Owen and co. cycle through North Yorkshire before turning south once more through York and Selby.
